The Drug War

A couple of weeks ago I criticized John Tierney for not taking on the drug war in a piece which seemed to confuse the overbroad application of Florida's draconian anti-drug laws with a campaign against pain management. So I have to give him credit for directly tackling the issue a couple of days ago.

  1. What exactly is his point? That by allowing alcohol and cigarettes but outlawing heroin the government is involved in line drawing with little scientific/economic justification? Okay, so what is his point? Is he in favor of legalizing all addictive substances or just drawing that artificial line somewhere else . . .

  2. You want a point from Tierney? If I were a more sarcastic, cynical person, I would suggest that one might read between the lines that Tierney's perhaps dabbled with a few illicit substances himself, which if true is probably all the "point" you can expect. Less cynically, Tierney recognzies that the drug war is problematic, but either has no alternative or chooses not to make explicit his proposals, such that he is limited principally to criticizing the status quo.
