If a parent gets pissed for any reason or for no reason and pulls their kids (as they can, thanks to school choice), then that money goes away. I have see the effects, as when a principal was afraid to discipline students lest the parents pull the kid. Parents who didn't like a teacher and requested a new one were accommodated, usually without question. The kids are running the schools, and we all know it.TeacherPattihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06224889631717470886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-7292701356638037032015-07-05T20:30:49.992-04:002015-07-05T20:30:49.992-04:00I read in my Dad's will that I am "Truste...I read in my Dad's will that I am "Trustee" for my brother's inheritance, (cuz he is a drug addict and cannot manage money.) I donated by credit card in November and December 2014. I then received a call from the same woman in January 2015 asking for more donations. I told her I already donated in Nov. and Dec. She said it was time to donate again. I said no, but I got a bill in the mail and phone calls ever hour to half hour between 9 am till 9 pm. AT&T will not block 800 numbers. Can't get ant sleep because of all the phone calls. The woman wants me to authorize 100,oo for each cancer group to be taken out of my cred card. 400.00 now for January and February then 200.00 a month each month after. otherwise they will not be able to take my phone number off the call list. I told them I did not have the money to donate anything because I had just paid all of my bills and only had enough to get me through the week. They agreed to take my address and the pledge card came today, they also called just a little bit ago to check on if the pledge card had arrived (they also called a few times this week while I was outside with my dogs and I couldn't get to the phone in time). I am so gullible I almost donated to these people, luckily I have an amazing husband who made me look them up before he would support my donating to them. We will not be donating now, and the pledge card is in the trash. Thank you so much for posting this and keeping it up, I know now to look these things up before making any donations.
Erica S.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-72153997302483756352015-01-16T14:41:07.944-05:002015-01-16T14:41:07.944-05:00The same "professional fundraiser" calls...The same "professional fundraiser" calls me at least once a month soliciting donations for The Breast Cancer Society. She sounds like she's my long-lost best friend. Says I'm "harder to reach than the last pickle in the jar," or a similar folksy line. I told her not to call me again, but my "old friend" keeps calling anyway. Today when she called and said she was mailing my pledge form, I said OK and hung up. Then Googled "Breast Cancer Society," found their contact info and called them to complain - (888) 470-7909. I calmly asked that they remove my name & number from their list. The nice women on the phone assured me that she would take care of it. We'll see... (BTW, I prefer to directly support causes rather than "give" 50% or so to the "professional fundraiser.")Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-4888875168243410582015-01-07T12:25:07.360-05:002015-01-07T12:25:07.360-05:00I noticed the same thing and changed my preference...I noticed the same thing and changed my preference to Duck Duck Go. But it certainly hasn’t gone away. Like others before him, Brooks pretends that we’re over it, passed it, nothing to see anymore, move along, which is of course horseshit. Redefining and relabeling does nothing to change the basic discrimination still being practiced. Worst of all, though, is that racists are given easy refuge by obfuscation of the sort Brooks offers. Not quite sure why you keep up the Brooks-watch, other than his reliable foolishness giving you something to rant about.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-86984092799462878192014-12-01T19:36:15.530-05:002014-12-01T19:36:15.530-05:00Most of the comments I see on Ferguson threads sim...Most of the comments I see on Ferguson threads simply depress me.Aaronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16523334580402022332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-71091931841988580272014-11-27T07:04:50.511-05:002014-11-27T07:04:50.511-05:00A very well written and balanced article - so I as...A very well written and balanced article - so I assume you will get very few or no comments on it.

Now, if you would just do an inflammatory piece about Ferguson, MO or mention the WWE you could double your traffic and gain a raft of well thought out comments . . .

CWDAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-78240051602765167272014-11-26T14:57:55.496-05:002014-11-26T14:57:55.496-05:00As you know, that only applies when the President ...As you know, that only applies when the President is a Republican.Aaronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16523334580402022332noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-48908989461571330962014-11-22T21:38:50.873-05:002014-11-22T21:38:50.873-05:00What happened to all that yap about the awesomenes...What happened to all that yap about the awesomeness of the "unitary executive"?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01284903745668997235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-52217966405145123372014-11-10T21:09:18.351-05:002014-11-10T21:09:18.351-05:00I watch and admit to being entertained, but I str...I watch and admit to being entertained, but I struggle quite a lot with Bill Maher’s attitudes and opinions, as well as those of his some of his guests. Because large portions of the show are unscripted, Maher’s writers feeding him prefab lines notwithstanding, it is often a good gauge of the range of opinions out there. His audience also gives immediate feedback in the form of groaning, booing, and applause. But Maher uses the show, at least in part, as a bully pulpit, with frequent bogus assertions of fact, truth, and his own authoritative opinion. Yet his expertise is in comedy, and I simply don’t buy that being a newshound and political junkie confers much authority over his guests.

Maher’s statements underlying his current conflict are textbook bigotry, enabled by what you refer to as the spotlight fallacy. Softening that, as Reza Aslan attempts, by saying that Maher doesn’t mean it spitefully, cuts no ice with me. Part of the problem is that adopting the jokey insult as a rhetorical form allows Maher (and other comics) to utter the most odious things imaginable and then take refuge behind the joke. In fact, getting the laugh, even after the groan (shades of Johnny Carson), justifies pretty much anything he might say. That, in turn, makes Maher irresponsible with his influence. Further, lots of earnest people of faith out there don’t respond to nastiness about their beliefs. Maher hasn’t exactly singled out Islam for abuse, but pretty close.

The wider issue of whether Maher is a suitable commencement speaker is not very important. He is certainly excellent at comedic line delivery and would entertain the commencement crowd better than the blowhard NYT columnist who spoke at mine years ago. Objectionable opinion (racism, bigotry, misogyny, etc.) doesn’t fully disqualify a speaker except perhaps the most vehement kinds, especially when warhawks who do much more actual damage in the world populate lecture circuits. However, in my experience, student bodies as mobs lack the nuance to entertain actual debate, not that a commencement address is in any fashion a colloquy. So instead they protest to silence uncomfortable or questionable opinion, accomplishing nothing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973827.post-70199375820410852812014-10-26T06:31:17.495-04:002014-10-26T06:31:17.495-04:00I had them send me their informaiion in the mail. ...I had them send me their informaiion in the mail.
