Doing the Math
Last I heard, seven reservists have been charged in association with abuses at Al Ghraib prison. Yet apparently there are more than one thousand, eight hundred (1,800) pictures and videos of abuse, torture and rape at Al Ghraib, presently in the hands of military investigators.
As I look at those numbers, either the seven reservists were some of the most unreserved shutterbugs in military history, or a lot more people need to be charged....

One moment we hear Private Lynndie England explain, "she was only following orders when she posed for the notorious photographs at the Abu Ghraib jail." The next moment we hear about a video which "shows Private England naked and eagerly engaging in romps with other soldiers while stripped Iraqi inmates were forced to watch the depraved sex shows." But Lynndie doesn't "kiss and tell" - although she insists all of this was pursuant to orders, "her lawyer said she was unable to identify who gave the orders."
ReplyDeleteI think a whole lot of other people need to be charged. Seriously. This whole business disgusts me and makes me angry and I dont think we need to be protecting people.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I hate your comments thing now. -Lynne
Regarding those allegations about Pfc England romping naked with the prisoners. Note the source cited for that story is London's The Sun, a British tabloid with a reputation for sleazy pseudo-journalism and stretching the truth. I wouldn't attach too much reliability to that story, given that the Sun wouldn't have any scruples about making stuff up, knowing that Pfc England isn't in much of a position to launch a libel action.
ReplyDeleteNot that this in any way condones the behaviour of Pfc England that *has* been documented. Her actions were totally reprehensible.
The New York Post is perhaps no more reliable than the Sun, but it is less lurid and a lot less likely to publish any allegations embarrassing to the Bush Administraiton - Here's their account of Lynndie England's escapades.
