After all, whatever the facts on the ground and despite the Republican Party's history both of abject failure and lack of ideas on how to do better, it's better to have war forever, at immense cost to both Afghanistan and our own nation, than to have one less issue with which to attack the incumbent President.
Some of those Republicans are at an age where it's safe to bet, a few decades ago, they were giggling about how Russia's war in Afghanistan helped bankrupt the USSR. Now we have the longest war in U.S. history, no end in sight, no indication that we have an effective strategy, no real sense of what the outcome will be if and when the war ends... and they're channeling the Kremlin of the 1980's.
